2011 La Liga Preview

The Spanish Primera Liga used to be a two horse race between Real and Barca but now it looks like the royal club from the capital are falling by the wayside with the Catalonians winning the last three in succession. In both of the last two seasons, Real have hit 90 points, yet it hasn’t been enough. Barcelona have lost just three league games in the last two seasons which is an incredible statistic, whichever way you look at it.

The addition Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas to the ranks can only increase Barcelona’s already highly potent attacking prowess and will strike fear through the hearts of their opponents.

In contrast, things have been surprisingly quiet at Real Madrid over the summer. Their big signings were Fabio Coentrao, Raphael Varane, Nuri Sahin and Jose Callejon .

Valencia finished third last season and bolstered their stocks by signing Diego Alves, Piatti and Parejo.

Atletico Madrid sold David De Gea and Sergio Aguero to English clubs, which brought in over €50m in funds. They bought Silvio, Gabi and Arda Turan and will hope to improve on their 7th place finish last term.

Real Betis won the Segunda Division last year and return to La Liga along with Rayo Vallecano. Granada won the playoff to reach the top flight after a 35 year absence.

Spain could have as many as seven representatives in European competition this season, with Sevilla, Bilbao and Atletico in the Europa league as well as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia in the Champions League who could be joined by Villareal should the ‘Yellow Submarine’ make it through the qualifiers.
