U20 World Cup Kicks Off in Colombia

The cream of world footballing talent heads to Colombia for the U20 World Cup. As the recent Copa America and Women’s World Cup have shown, international football is buzzing and this tournament stands to be brilliant.

Who will reign at the U20 World Cup? Will it be Argentina with three of the last four titles or will Uruguay continue their resurgence and follow in the footsteps of the triumphant seniors?

Hosts Colombia are in Group A with France, Mali and South Korea. This is a balanced group. In Group B you have Cameroon, New Zealand, Portugal and Uruguay. Group C is home to Australia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Spain. Croatia, Guatemala, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia are in a cosmopolitan Group D while Group E sees Austria, Brazil, Egypt and Panama fight it out. Finally Argentina, England, Mexico and North Korea will battle it out in Group F.

There will be some household names on show, for example France’s Francis Coquelin and Gael Kakuta who both play in the English Premier League. The mighty Spain boast talent such as Cristian Tllo, Koke and Daniel Pachecho within their ranks, all of whom will hope to achieve the kind of success enjoyed by some of the stars of the last tournament - Luis Suarez, Jozy Altidore, Javier Hernández, Carlos Vela, Pato, David Luiz, Sergio Agüero and Angel Di Maria, to name but a few!

Talent scouts, managers and agents from around the world will be there watching every game and the most outstanding players are sure to become transfer targets for the world’s biggest clubs.

There have already been a few surprises and the football betting world was shocked when holders Ghana failed to qualify for this year’s tournament. Other notable absentees include Japan, USA, Netherlands and Italy.

South American sides have had the most success in this tournament with Argentina and Brazil sharing the title 10 times between them. The last European side to win was Spain in 1999 and with a team containing Xavi and Iker Casillas it wasn’t the most surprising outcome.
