Euro 2012 Best Goals

A run-down of the ten best goals from Euro 2012 this summer

There were 76 goals in total at Euro 2012 this summer, here’s a countdown of ten of the best:

10) Theo Walcott (ENGLAND vs. Sweden)

Arsenal winger Walcott entered the fray after England fell 2-1 behind to the Swedes early in the second half. After the Scandinavians tried to clear their lines from a set piece, Walcott smacked a twenty yard strike into the top corner of the net – a slice of fortune perhaps judging by the look on his face, but a solid strike nonetheless.

9) Michael Krohn-Delhi (DENMARK vs. Germany)

Denmark hit back against the run of play when 1-0 behind after a sweeping counter attack was finished by a bullet header from Krohn-Delhi – the man who condemned Holland to defeat on match day one.

8) Mario Balotelli (ITALY vs. Ireland)

Bad boy Balotelli sealed the deal for Italy in their final group match with Ireland, converting a late corner tremendously with a semi-bicycle kick that left Shay Given rooted to the spot.

7) Marco Reus (GERMANY vs. Greece)

Germany were scintillating against the Greeks and the match was well and truly put to bed when Marco Reus bashed home a stunning drive from the corner of the penalty area allowing keeper Sifakis no chance.

6) Phillip Lahm GERMANY vs. Greece)

Lahm has long time been regarded as one of the world’s best attacking full backs and he did his reputation no harm against Greece. After cutting inside onto his right foot, Lahm lashed home a beautiful swerving shot which set Germany on their way to a resounding victory.

5) Rafael Van Der Vaart (HOLLAND vs. Portugal)

Van Der Vaart can hardly be blamed for Holland’s dire showing at the championship after sitting out the majority of the first two games. His impact upon inclusion against Portugal was almost instant and he curled in a perfect shot from outside the area to put the Orange Army back on level terms – albeit it briefly.

4) David Silva (SPAIN vs. Italy)

Silva’s opener in the final was hardly special from an individual perspective however it has to be regarded as one of the best team goals this summer. The Iberians flooded forward to overwhelm Italy and after getting in behind the back of the Azzurri, Silva latched on to a powerful cut back to head the ball past a despairing Buffon.

3) Jakub Blaszczykowski (POLAND vs. Russia)

Poland responded to encouragement from their raucous home crowd after falling behind to the Russians and Jakub Blaszczykowski really gave them something to celebrate when he turned past Yuri Zhirkov on the right before netting a wonderful left footed effort from the edge of the area into the roof of the Russian goal.

2) Sami Khedira (GERMANY vs. Greece)

This really was a night for spectacular goals and Sami Khedira’s unstoppable volley has to rate as the best of the bunch. The Real Madrid man whacked in a perfectly placed Mezut Ozil corner and almost broke the Greek net in the process.

1) Mario Gomez (GERMANY vs. Holland)

Gomez ended as joint top scorer at the championship and his goal against Holland was easily his best and arguably the finest at Euro 2012. The big Bayern Munich hitman spun a full 360 degrees to turn past the Dutch back line and bury a clean finish past Stekelenburg – a strike highly reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp in his pomp.
