General Information

Four time World Cup winners Italy have enjoyed less success on the European stage having conquered the continent on just the one occasion back in 1968.

The Azzurri came close to a repeat triumph back in 2000 but were sunk by the boot of David Trezeguet who scored a Golden Goal to clinch the honours for France deep into extra time.

Coach Cesare Prandelli has a decent squad at his disposal this time around however experience may not be enough with Spain likely to eclipse them in the group phase.

Nevertheless, the Italians did qualify impressively, topping the table unbeaten to secure a clear passage through to this year’s Championship.

Chances

Spain are fancied to top Group C but Italy may be able to snatch a point from the Iberians in the opening game. The Azzuri’s class should see them through to the last eight but an ageing squad means that the longevity of their challenge is surely in doubt.

Key Player: Danielle De Rossi

Roma’s tough and sturdy midfield general will need to use all of his destructive qualities to keep Italy competitive with the likes of Spain and Germany.

TitanBet Prediction

Quarter Finals - A last eight clash with either France or England should be on the horizon for Italy who can take second spot in Group C, but the ageing Azzurri look vulnerable to both Les Bleus and the Three Lions who will hold a massive advantage in terms of athleticism and pace.

Did You Know:

Only four nations competed in the 1968 European Championship when Italy were last crowned champions. The Azzurri beat Yugoslavia to the title after drawing with the Soviet Union in the semis – a match which went the way of the Italian’s via a coin toss.
