Return of the Premier League

It is only a matter of weeks before the Premier League returns. During the off-season, there has been some football in terms of the U17 World Cup, the Women’s World Cup, the Copa America and the U20 World Cup but this is the real thing.

As usual, worldwide focus will be on the English Premier League. There will be much interest to see how whizz kid Andre Villas-Boas fares at Chelsea, who’ve slowly lost their identity as the league’s big spenders behind moneybags Manchester City whose acquisition of Gael Clichy, Stefan Savic and Sergio Aguero indicate that no amount is too much when it comes to landing one of their targets. If wantaway talisman Carlos Tevez does stay at Eastlands, the Premier League better watch out and City will surely be amongst the very top favourites to be crowned champions.

Liverpool wanted to make some big signings during the off-season and finally got their men in Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Alex Doni and Stewart Downing and will be looking to get straight back into Europe.  Kenny Dalglish did well when he took over from Roy Hodgson during the course of last season and now he has the chance to be at the help from matchday one. Can he inspire Liverpool back to their winning ways? Football betting doesn’t seem to think so.

Manchester United may have won the league but they fell short in the cup competitions and Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that his shrewd summer signings manage to bring the highly sought after extra successes.

Could the off-field dramas do what no-one else has been able to do and that is slow down Ryan Giggs? Will Nasri & Fabregas still be waring red and white come kick off? Not long before we find out and, as usual, it should be a fascinating season.
