Best Matches of World Cup 2010

Slovakia 3-2 Italy – This match had everything; 5 goals, plenty of near-misses, 8 yellow cards (issued, surprisingly, by Howard Webb), goal-line clearances, a disallowed goal, great saves and a 50/50 share of possession. Fabio Quagliarella’s 92nd minute consolation goal was one to savour but it counted for nothing as the World Champions were eliminated at the hands of footballing minnows.

Argentina 0-4 Germany – Messi and co were no match for the magnificent Germans who took just 3 minutes to open the scoring against their long-standing rivals. Schweinsteiger was sensational throughout and supplied both the cross for the first goal and beat half the Argentinian team before cutting back for Friedrich to apply the simple finishing-touch for 3-0. A masterclass in counter-attacking football which humbled Maradona’s Argentina.

Uruguay 1-1 Ghana (aet, 4-2 pens) – 120 minutes of action, a dramatic penalty shoot out, 40 shots, 20 corners, and of course some heinous cheating from Luis Suarez which saw the Uruguayan sent off and Ghana awarded a last minute penalty. Gyan missed the penalty (and the chance to send Ghana into the last 4) and the match was eventually settled by an audacious chipped penalty by old-boy Sebastian Abreu and some heroics from keeper Muslera in the shoot-out.
